Joinery is a part of woodworking that involves joining together pieces of wood or lumber, to produce more complex items. some wood joints employ fasteners, bindings, or adhesives, while others use only wood elements. the characteristics of wooden joints - strength, flexibility, toughness, appearance, etc. - derive from the properties of the materials involved and the purpose of the joint.. Woodworking joints are useful in woodworking. it is one of the basics that you have to learn, practice and master. it can give you the ability of joining wood together and still come up with excellent results for every project. at the very least, a more difficult joint is said to be a stronger choice, according to the pros.. Rabbet woodworking joints. a rabbet is a recess cut into the edge of a piece of wood. when viewed in cross-section, a rabbet is two-sided and open to the end of the surface.an example of the use of a rabbet is in the back edge of a cabinet. the rabbet allows the back to fit flush with the sides..

What is the strongest joint for wood? arguably the strongest is known as a mortise and tenon joint. this type of joint consists of one piece of wood that has a hole cut into it while the other piece is shaped to fit into that hole. you will see this type of joint most often on bed frames.. The mortise and tenon joinery method is one of the oldest in woodworking, but it’s every bit as good today as it ever was. the mortise is a cavity cut into a piece of wood, and the tenon is the end of the adjoining piece that is cut down in size to fit snugly inside – with glue, of course.. Joinery makes or breaks a project. generally, the more difficult the joint, the stronger it is. that's why woodworkers decide on the joints they'll use early on in the planning stages. here's a sampling of popular joints, some simple, some more difficult. butt joint. a simple joining of two pieces of wood, either at a corner or edge to edge..
